Who is Misbah Tariq, could you please introduce yourself?

My name is Misbah Tariq. I am a certified Pastry Chef, Baker, and Chocolatier. I am the founder of Cakes By Me Bakery.

What is your business and when did you start?

Cakes By Me Bakery is a result of my passion and creativity in the art of baking. If you do what you love, it no longer feels like a job. In 2019, I created this company after over ten years of experience in the industry.

What inspired you to start your business?

My passion for baking, led me to getting trained in different baking programs. Being self taught for a while, I decided to get certified in the Baking Arts program at Humber. I was addicted to this feeling of learning new techniques in my field. I also did a Culinary Skills program. I recently finished off a masters degree in Chocolate and Confectionary Arts. I started Cakes By Me Bakery so that I can share these skills with the world and create beautiful desserts for everyone.

What were the challenges in the initial stages of your business and how did you overcome them?

When I first started Cakes By Me Bakery, I was still finishing off my masters program for Chocolate and Confectionary Arts. I was also much older than most of the students in classes, but I didn’t let that stop me. I found it challenging to balance both and school, having crazy long hours along with many cake and pastry orders. I overcame this by learning how to properly create a work/life balance and work with my clients way more in advance.

What motivates you about your business?

Seeing the happiness and excitement on my clients faces when they their custom desserts. I love that my business becomes a big part of my customers events and stages of life.

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?

Follow your dreams and never give up when things get difficult. You’re never too old to follow your passion in life. I didn’t give up and achieved my dreams at an older age.

Interesting fact most of the people do not know about you?

I have the biggest sweet tooth ever, and tend to make at least one dessert or cake every day, whether I have an order or not.

The best business advice I ever received was…

My professor told me, don’t just work harder, work smarter. That really resonated with me and I have applied it to my business ever since.

My definition of success is…

Do what you love and have passion for, because then it no longer feels like work.

If I could go back in time when I started my business, I would tell myself to…

Don’t surround yourself with the people who put you down and are envious of your success. Instead keep around those who are positive and happy for you.
