Who is Elizabeth Currie-Shier, could you please introduce yourself?

Hey! I am Beth Shier, Director of the Oakville Success Centre. I am a licensed Davis Dyslexia Correction Facilitator as well as a licensed Davis Autism Approach and Davis Concepts for Life Facilitator/Coach. I am also the mother to 2 grown gifted and talented picture thinkers. The oldest is dyslexic and the youngest is on the autism spectrum. I love my life and my career and the families I work with!

What is your business and when did you start?

I do programs based on the methods by Ron Davis which value the unique thinking style most often used by clients with reading, math, executive function and social integration challenges. Neurodiversity is seen as different, not less. I have been doing this for 12 years now! I can’t picture myself doing anything else!

What inspired you to start your business?

My dyslexic daughter. We tried the conventional methods with no success. Then I found Davis…. game changer.

What were the challenges in the initial stages of your business and how did you overcome them?

My own limiting beliefs – that it’s “bad” to make money from families who are struggling and that successful people are “selfish”. Once I let that go and began to see money as a simple exchange of energy and the sky became the limit  – my calendar got full of happy clients and my bills got paid easily. Abundance.

What motivates you about your business?

The look on the faces of my clients and their families as they realize the gifts they have and how they can use them to manage their weaknesses. The way my clients seem to walk a little taller when they achieve their goals. The tears of joy on the faces of the parents and grandparents of my kiddo clients.

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?

If you are doing what you love, your clients feel the passion, flock to your doorstep,  and are happy to pay for your services.

Interesting fact most of the people do not know about you?

I swallowed a quarter in grade ! And had to get it surgically removed from my esophagus. Fun times. But when I work with a child with self regulation challenges who doesn’t realize that something is dangerous, I remind myself that I was once a child too.

The best business advice I ever received was…

You can’t help everyone so make sure the people that come to you are qualified clients. Taking this to heart was huge for me. Now I only attract clients that believe in the methods I do, the programs I provide, and they have the motivation to follow through. Very freeing..

My definition of success is…

Participating fully in the life I choose and giving my clients tools and concepts so that they can do the same.

If I could go back in time when I started my business, I would tell myself to…

Relax! Small steps provide the intention to make big change.

Three books I recommend for entrepreneurs are…

Whatever you like to read gives your brain the space to process what it’s supposed to be processing.
But anything about the Law of Attraction is good.

My personal tagline is…

“When you know better, you do better.” – Maya Angelou
